Eastern Nazarene sophomore Aaron Johnson score 18 first half points to lead the Lions to an 80-73 road victory against the University of New England Wednesday night. Johnson shot 7 of 12 from the floor including 4-6 from behind the arc en route to scoring a game high 22 points to even up the Lions’ TCCC record at 2-2 on the season.
Eastern Nazarene came out firing on all cylinders as Johnson hit back-to-back three pointers to help the Lions quickly build a 10-0 lead to start the game. UNE responded with a 15-5 run that drew the game to a 15-all tie with just over 11 minutes remaining in the first half.
Eastern Nazarene closed out the first half on a 19-8 outburst that led them to close out the first half with a 49-37 lead.
ENC maintained a double digit lead for most of the second half until the Nor’easters closed the gap to just 5 with 1:13 remaining. Aaron Johnson stymied the comeback effort with a pair of free throws. A DeAngelo Alston steal with just 2 seconds remaining sealed the victory for the visiting Lions.
Johnson finished the game leading in points but also led his team in assists with 5 and led all players with 7 steals.
Eastern Nazarene freshman John Flakes continued his stellar rookie year scoring 19 points and pulling in a game high 11 rebounds. Alston finished with 12 points off the bench while forward C.J. Gonzales scored 11 points and pulled down 8 rebounds in 25 minutes.
For the Nor’easters, Charles Fenner hit four three pointers on his way to a game high 25 points. Teammate Marcus Winn scored 13 points while Chas Rentrope and Nevin Lessard scored 11 and 10 points respectively. Rentrope also added a game high 6 assists and a team high 7 rebounds.
The Lions will have a chance to get their conference record over the .500 mark this Saturday as they play host to TCCC opponent Regis College. Tip off at ENC’s Lahue PE Center is set for 3pm.
